While walking along the trail at the Osprey Pond at Pickney Island National Wildlife Refuge I stumbled upon an the last of five alligators I saw during my morning hike. It was sunning itself on the bank next to the trail. Having never experienced an alligator in the wild, I was a little hesitant to continue my hike past him at first. Deciding I wanted to see what was ahead on the path, I slowly and confidently made my way on by after taking a picture. The alligator never moved.
The shot was made using a Canon 60D with a Tamron 18-400mm lens at 177mm, handheld at 1./160 sec. at f/7.1. I would estimate I was about 10 feet away.
